Phased Development

A manufacturer of flammable gas detectors with limited in-house engineering capacity chose to outsource a new product’s design to several consultants and use its internal staff to manage the project.

Solution

Our role was to design electronics and firmware for the signal processing module of the sensor, working closely with the physicist designing the sensing probe and others designing the packaging. We broke the project into phases, each quoted and contracted separately, giving the client great flexibility in managing the overall process. The first phase was initial circuit design, including parts selection with cost and size estimates, block diagram, and schematics. The second phase covered experiments to determine the best algorithms for converting raw signals from the sensor into meaningful measurements. Additional later phases (firmware specification, firmware design & debug) carried the project to successful completion.
